During the heat of summer, sometimes it feels like there’s no escape from the sun – especially if you’re wearing a furry coat! As a result, many dogs spend the hottest hours of the day seeking shade and sleeping in the coolest place they can find – hidden among shrubbery, under a table, in the basement of the house, or under a tree.

But sleeping through the day isn’t always an option when we’re out on the trail with our best furry friends, and shade isn’t always available to provide the sun protection dogs need. That’s why Ruffwear designed the Swamp Cooler™! This cooling vest not only cools dogs, but it also reflects the sun, providing the added effect of shade.

So, how does the Swamp Cooler work? It’s pretty simple. The Swamp Cooler uses natural evaporative cooling. When you step out of a swimming pool or lake, you feel cooler as your skin hits the air. If there’s a breeze, the cooling happens even faster. This is evaporative cooling! It also occurs through perspiration. When sweat evaporates, we cool down. As we move around, the air flow cools us down even quicker.

The Swamp Cooler jacket works the same way. It’s built with three layers: a wicking outer layer that facilitates evaporation (and also reflects sunlight for additional shade), an absorbent middle layer that holds water for evaporation, and a comfortable inner layer that transfers the cooling effect to your dog. To activate the Swamp Cooler, soak it in cold water and wring it out before fastening it on your dog. As the water evaporates from the coat, the heat around your dog is exchanged for cooler air. Continue sprinkling water on the Swamp Cooler as needed to extend the cooling effect throughout your adventures.

    1. Hi, Joseph –
The Swamp Cooler has a side release buckle with an adjustable girth strap. Simply tighten the strap for a snug fit and you’re ready to go!

  1. Hey!
I was looking for a life jacket for my dog and saw this sweet vest too, and I had questions about the size.
My girl is a 10 months Bernese Mountain Dog (just like on the picture), so rather large dog, but since she’s still not fully grown (she still has to take some weight) I’m not sure about the right size.
Her back is already 65 cm long (so XL), her girth around 83 cm (so L), but when I check the neck measurement it’s rather Medium sized …
So my questions are: if I take the XL size, can I ajust the girth and the neck? Does it have to be snuck to the body? Or do you think I should go for a L size?
Oh, and just read that you can put the vest under the palissade pack, so I assume it’s also ok to put it under the approach pack?
Thanks a lot for the answers!

    1. Hi, Aurélie – That is a lot of questions, but let’s see if we can help! 🙂 Yes, you can put the Swamp Cooler under the Approach Pack. The girth strap is adjustable, but the neck is not adjustable. You do want a snug fit for the most effective cooling performance. She’s still at the lower end of the L sizing range, so we would recommend sticking with the L, unless you think the neck will be too tight. If the neck will be too tight, then you can size up and cinch down the girth strap. Your best bet is to measure her neck girth and use our fit guide. Hope this helps! 2. Assuming a 90 degree day with low humidity, how long will it take before It has to be re-wet?

    1. Hi Fred –
There are too many variables for us to accurately determine how long it will take the Swamp Cooler to dry out. It can be anywhere from 45 minutes to 4 hours, or more depending on conditions, how wet the vest is when applied, etc. We recommend rewetting the Swamp Cooler, as needed, with a water bottle or natural body of water. In addition to the evaporative cooling the vest offers, it also acts as a parasol from the sun and keeps the sun off the dog’s back. Thanks for your question!

    1. Hi, Diane – You can use the Swamp Cooler under the Palisades Pack. The cooling effect may be slightly diminished, because the water will not be able to evaporate as quickly where it is covered by the pack.

  3. Seems like a great product. People don’t take enough care (mostly because they don’t know enough) about how high temperatures can affect a dog, so there comes thoughtfully developed products and good educational explanation why to use it. Good job!
