As part of our month-long celebration of October’s Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, we are sharing another Ruff Adventure Dog update. Kathlern, one of August’s new forever humans, took time to answer some of our questions about her recent RAD adoption experience, thanks Kathleen!

HOW LONG HAS AUGUST BEEN PART OF YOUR FAMILY?

August joined the family on June 18, 2015.

WHAT ABOUT AUGUST INSPIRED YOU TO MAKE HIM PART OF YOUR FAMILY?  WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO ADOPT HIM?

We were inspired to adopt a dog after Visiting Best Friends Sanctuary in Southern Utah.  It was an amazing experience and watching what they do for unwanted pets, made us want to a part of their mission, even if it was on a small scale.  We met a number of staff who had left careers in other fields to be a part of something they believed in.  Among them was a woman from our area who had spent a great deal of time working with August so he could find his forever home.  After meeting a number of dogs, my son immediately clicked with August.  He was playful and active, which fit our lifestyle, and got along well with other dogs.  As we already had 3 dogs at home, that was very important to us.  And, of course, it goes without saying how cute he is!

HOW HAS HAVING AUGUST IN YOUR FAMILY CHANGED YOUR LIFE?

image2Our 15-year old son, Chris, is August’s primary caretaker and watching him mature and grow by taking his responsibilities to August seriously, has been a source of pride and happiness to his father and me.   Every morning before school, he takes August on a long walk to work off some of August’s energy.  In the evening, he takes him out again, as well as spending time playing chase with him and cleaning up after him. Additionally, he is solely responsible for training August and has even attended classes with him.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE OR FAVORITE EXPERIENCE THAT YOU’VE SHARED WITH AUGUST?

Chris’s favorite moment with August was the first time he jumped into the pool with him.  He greatly enjoyed swimming with him this summer.  The most memorable experience for me was walking into my room and finding August playing on my bed with a live lizard that he had managed to catch.  I have no doubt that all our neighbors heard my screams.

WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE THAT WAS CONSIDERING ADOPTING A DOG?

Chris suggests choosing a dog whose activity level is in sync with the families.
