Original_Bowl2One of the strongest driving forces for the Ruffwear product development team is the desire to create smart products that solve real customer problems. That is in fact, how Ruffwear’s first product, and the entire brand, was born – solving a problem – or in this case, a request from a friend.

It all started on a break during a mountain bike ride in California. While trying to give her dog Moqui a drink, Patrick Kruse’s friend Liz emptied half of her water bottle into a plastic bag and held it while the Rhodesian Ridgeback took a few slurps. Moqui then walked away panting, and Liz was left holding the bag—she couldn’t set it down without losing the water and she didn’t want to dump what was left back into her water bottle. “You need to do something about this,” Liz said, challenging Patrick to develop a solution.

That was 1992 and Patrick was an intrepid kayaker and small business owner designing paddle sports apparel and accessories through Salamander Paddle Gear. With his experience in technical fabrics and design, Patrick set out to build a waterproof bowl that would pack small for outdoor adventures. In 1994 after sixteen months of research, development, and testing, The Quencher™ collapsible food and water bowl was created.

Original BowlFast-forward twenty years and one product that is still the flagship product of the Ruffwear line is the Quencher Bowl. The Quencher is a tried and tested product that, although has received minor upgrades in fabric and design over the years, still performs flawlessly every time you use it.

One major testament to the quality of the Quencher is the amount of photos and stories we receive from customers showing us their original Quencher Bowls and other Quenchers that have lived great, adventurous lives.
