The year of the road trip continues! Yesterday, we highlighted our new Dirtbag™ Seat Cover. Today, we introduce the all-new Load Up™ Vehicle Restraint Harness.

3060_LoadUpHarness_Lifestyle07_ZoomThe Ruffwear Load Up Harness is a vehicle restraint harness designed to safely transport dogs to and from adventures. Ruffwear’s Load Up Harness combines strength-rated hardware with high-quality webbing and materials to offer a strong, secure restraint for dogs traveling in vehicles.

We designed the harness with the dog’s comfort and safety in mind. The harness attaches to existing seatbelts for a universal fit, keeps dogs secure during sudden vehicle movements and minimizes driver distraction.

3060_LoadUpHarness_ObsidianBlack_Right_ZoomThe Load Up Harness is easy to put on and adjust, comfortable for dogs to wear during extended travel and can be left on dogs for bathroom breaks and during rest stops.

As part of our development process, the Load Up Harness was dynamically tested at MGA Research Corp (a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration contracted test facility) under the conditions outlined in Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213. To learn all about the testing and see the dynamic test videos, click HERE.

Through testing, our Product Development team was able to further refine the Load Up Harness to ensure that it provides secure restraint, while also being comfortable enough to allow your dog to sit, lay down, or just get a breath of fresh air.

  1. I agree that a harness that transitions from car to walking is preferable. My dog is typically excited to get out for a walk once we arrive at our destination. I can’t imagine trying to get the car harness off and harness for walks on.

  2. The loop strap that the seat belt goes through seems much more flimsy than the rest of this harness. The body of the harness seems very sturdy, top quality. Is the strap stronger than it looks?

    1. Hi Fran. The Attachment Loop is very strong. The attachment loop on the Load Up Harness is a continuous webbing loop with overlapping webbing and stitching closure that encapsulates each of the girth, chest and neck martingale webbing assemblies. Ruffwear’s Load Up Harness is built on the same premise as our proven Doubleback™ strength rated harness. Both the Load Up and Doubleback harnesses employ webbing construction and assembly that is standard construction and assembly implemented in climbing, OSHA, as well as offshore sail racing harnesses. The webbing is the structure. The fabric “vest” is simply a skin that contains the continuous webbing assemblies. If the fabric “vest” stitching did fail, the attach loop continues to contain the girth, chest and neck martingale webbing.

  3. Can you set up the girth straps so they don’t need to adjusted every time. Watching the video it seems likes it takes a wee bit longer than the system I currently use (clix system). Having two dogs, it would be great to just strap in and go.
Big fan of the Ruffwear ranger.

  4. Will this work with a line running across the back seat, or does it need the seatbelt? And is there a front clip for leash attachment during bio-breaks, or just the top clip? Love that you did such thorough safety testing!

    1. HI Laura. It will probably work as a restraint harness in the scenario you are asking about, though not as a safety harness for sudden changes in movement with the vehicle (ie accidents) unless the line is designed to withstand the forces of sudden impact.

  5. Having tested this harness for the past 6 months I can not say enough good things about it. As with all RuffWear gear it is superbly constructed and built to last. We generally keep our dogs crated in the car for safety concerns and both the dogs and us found it a real treat to be able to have them tag along in the front seat for a change. The harness provides support in all the right spots and honestly seems to keep them calm and content being closer to us. Anything that makes traveling for our four legged friends is great and the fact it is a RuffWear product makes me trust it way more than others on the market.
