It is getting hot out! Your dog still wants to play but is panting and not quite as enthusiastic halfway through your normal daily walk, run or ride and seeks shade like a magnet. The challenge for dogs is that they do not have the ability to really sweat across their entire body to stay cool. They sweat a little through their paws, but panting is their main method of cooling off. Ruffwear redesigned our customer favorite Swamp Cooler cooling vest so that your pup can continue to explore the world’s great sites all summer long without overheating. Receiving an average review of 5 out of 5 stars by our customers, the Swamp Cooler is a dog-pleaser, keeping their core body temperature cool as the outside temps approach triple digits.

In our 2013 redesign, we focused on materials and fit. By updating the Swamp Cooler materials, we created a cooler functioning (and looking!) vest, as well as increased the duration of time the vest holds water used in the evaporative cooling process. The result is extended cooling that allows dogs and humans to make the most out of our warmer days.

How does it work?  Simply soak the vest with water, wring it out and put it on your dog! The evaporative cooling process will move heat away and cool moist air towards your dog.

The Swamp Cooler is designed with three distinct functional layers. First, the outer layer acts as a parasol, blocking the sun, and is highly breathable to assist in the evaporative process and keep air moving through the vest to cool the inner layers. Second, the middle layer is the absorbent layer that holds the water after you soak it. And third, the comfortable inner mesh layer wicks water from the mid-layer to the dog’s body keeping them cool.

To keep your pup running cool all summer long, the Swamp Cooler is your go-to vest. For more info on the Swamp Cooler, click HERE.

  1. Hello

Can you use this product underneath the Ruffwear Approach pack? Or is it too thick or too cumbersome?

    1. Hi Dan,

You can definitely use the Swamp Cooler under the Approach Pack. It will lose a little bit of it’s breathability but will still be cooler than without it.

  2. Hi there, I’m Julia from Berlin Germany and I wonder if I could order a swamp cooler directly from you..or do I have to purchase it from a local dealer..I know Globetrotter is a reseller of yours but I could’nt find the cooler there..What would shiping cost and how could I pay (IBAN< BIC?) My pup would be so happy to get cooler 🙂 best wishes from Berlin, Joules and lill'doggy Fox

  3. I can’t tell from the specs… does it double as a harmless? Or with it on do you have to connect a leash to the collar

  4. I must have missed something when I purchased the swamp cooler. What are the suggestions for care of it? My Newfkom’s cooler is getting stinky. Can it be washed, etc.?

    1. Hi Catherine,
You can machine wash it. Here are our cleaning tips:
      – Secure all Buckles
      – Machine Wash
      – Cold Water
      – Gentle Cycle
      – Mild Detergent
      – Tumble Dry Low
      – Do Not Bleach, Iron or Dry Clean

      Hope that helps!!

    1. Hi Lucina,
It does. It is very breathable so it is not a true winter coat, but in the evening, a dry Swamp Cooler can cut the chill slightly.

    1. Hi Sasha,

See Ellen’s response below. She lives in Houston and has had great success with it, even in very humid environments.

It will stay wet longer, which is a plus, but might not be as efficient as it would be in a drier environment but still much better than no Swamp Cooler!

  5. Hi, this looks like a great product! Have you had any feedback from husky owners? I’m just wondering how successful is the vest when faced with a VERY thick coat? Thanks!

    1. Hi A Husky Life! A couple weeks ago, we tested a Swamp Cooler out on a Newfoundland with a very thick black coat. After about 10 minutes with the coat on, there was a very noticeable difference in the temperature of his fur where the coat was covering. It might take a little longer for the cooling to reach through the fur, but it really still helped!

    1. We live in Houston and our humidity is off the charts. I think it works very well, especially if your dog likes to run. You just have to add water to it every 45 minutes to an hour.

      1. For the Swamp Cooler, we recommend sizing UP if you are in between sizes for more coverage. We would suggest going with the XL.

  6. We purchased one for our Australian Blue Heeler who luvs the outdoors, dispute the heat. It fit well, stays in place, and no matter what he’s doing, he seems comfortable in it. We recommend to everyone and they come in various sizes.

  7. I just bought one and my dog loves it. We really need it here in Houston, Texas. He wore it recently to the beach for a sandcastle competition and it allowed him to stay cool for several hours.
