“Mud season” describes the condition of dirt paths, roads, and trails in late Winter and early Spring, when the ground begins to thaw. Mud season occurs in places where deeply frozen ground is covered with snow that melts in the Spring. The moisture from the snow melt is unable to be absorbed by the soil because of its frozen state, creating a messy, muddy layer on top–a condition exacerbated by car and bike tread.
