Do all the options in dog packs leave you feeling like a “pack” rat?  Which has the most capacity?  Is the most comfortable?  Has the leanest profile?

Ruff Wear makes three dog packs, each with a different function and purpose in mind—a backpacking pack, all-purpose pack, and hydration pack.

Our most integrated and largest capacity pack—the Palisades Pack™—is the ultimate in fully-featured packs, ideal for backpacking trips.  It includes two, 1L each water bladders complete with hose for hydration at camp.  The removable saddlebags, great for river crossings and in camp, give your dog a break from carrying the load.  The saddlebags are made up of two extra-large panniers with a total capacity of 10L (size S) to 18L (size L).  Other features include waterproof zippers, gear loops, drain holes, and a compression system for cinching down the load (preventing saddlebag flop).

For a simple, functional solution, choose our Approach Pack™.  This is a great all-purpose pack loaded with enough function and capacity for just about any activity.  It features waterproof zippers, gear loops, 2L (size XXS) to 16L (size L) capacity, and an extended size range to fit dogs 12″ to 48″ around (XXS – L).

Our newest pack—the SingleTrak Pack™—is a great option for short-duration, high-energy activities.  The two, 0.5L each water bladders make for easy, on-the-go hydration when water isn’t available on the trail.  This is our lightest, most breathable, and lowest-profile pack.  The 2.4L total capacity panniers ensure a light, flop-free load, reducing bulk so your dog can maneuver around the narrowest paths and singletracks without getting stuck.

In order to help our customers select the best option for their dog, we developed this chart outlining the strengths of each of our three packs.  Now if you’re a pack rat, it’s only because you want to be!

  1. I have to disagree with the Approach pack’s water carrying capacity being not ideal. Although it does not come with water bladders or bottles like the Palisades and Singletrak, I can easily fit a 1 liter Platypus bottle in each side of the size Medium Approach, making the capacity actually larger than the Singletrak, which is supposedly designed to carry water. And even with 2 liters of water, the packs are not full and there’s still tons more room to carry other stuff.

    1. Thanks for the comment, Debbie. Because the Approach Pack™ does not come with water bladders like the other two packs, we marked as less ideal, but many of our customers place their own bladders in the Approach Pack™ as you suggest and have great success with it. Thanks for sharing!
